A merchant cash advance is collected from an Ottumwa, IA diner or store as a fixed share of each day's card sales, the holdback, until a total set by the factor rate has come in. It is not a loan. Granitewick Funding Group passes the request to merchant cash advance companies among its funding partners, and each provider makes its own offer.
How a merchant cash advance is collected from an Ottumwa, IA diner or store: the holdback on card sales, the factor rate and the total collected, what a slow stretch does to the remittance, and an invented comparison with fixed-payment working capital.
Holdbacks tied to card sales
With a merchant cash advance, a provider pays a diner or store a lump sum and buys a share of its future card sales in return. A merchant cash advance is not a loan: there is no interest rate and no monthly due date. Collection runs through the card processor, which splits each day's batch and sends the holdback percentage to the provider before the rest reaches the business account.
Illustration only, invented figures: an Ottumwa, IA diner takes $1,180 a day in card sales and agrees to an 11% holdback. In this example, $129.80 goes to the provider each day and the other $1,050.20 lands in the diner's account as usual.
The merchant cash advance page has a calculator for the holdback, the factor rate and daily card sales. In the 2023 ZIP Code Business Patterns count, 19 full-service restaurant establishments, diners among them, sat at ZIP 52501 addresses.
Factor rates and the total payback
The factor rate sets the total the provider collects: the amount received times the factor. The difference between that total and the amount received is the cost in dollars, and it is fixed the day the agreement is signed, however long collection takes.
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| Amount received | $16,000 |
| Factor rate | 1.30 |
| Total to be collected | $20,800 |
| Cost in dollars | $4,800 |
| Holdback at 11% of $1,180 a day | $129.80 |
| Business days to collect at that pace | 161 |
In this example the $20,800 total takes about 161 business days to come in at a steady $129.80 a day, the last day a partial one. Because the $4,800 cost in this example is fixed, a shorter collection period raises the cost per month and a longer one lowers it.
Slow weeks and the remittance
A slow stretch lowers the remittance on its own when the holdback is a true percentage of each batch. Smaller card batches mean smaller amounts to the provider, and the business keeps the same share of what it does sell.
Illustration only, invented figures: card sales at the same diner drop to $820 a day for 20 business days. In this example, at the 11% holdback, each of those days sends $90.20 instead of $129.80, so $792 less reaches the provider over that stretch. In this example collection runs about 6 business days longer at the normal pace, and the total collected stays $20,800.
Some agreements take a fixed daily debit from the bank account instead of a share of each batch. That remittance does not drop when sales do unless the agreement has a reconciliation clause and the business asks for an adjustment. Snack and Nonalcoholic Beverage Bars (NAICS 722515), coffee and smoothie counters among them, had 9 establishments in Wapello County, IA in 2023 (CBP), a group whose card days can swing like this.
Comparing an advance with fixed-payment working capital
Fixed-payment working capital works the other way around. A working capital loan has an interest rate, a term and a payment that stays the same whatever the week's sales. Illustration only, invented figures: $16,000 of working capital over 12 months at an invented 17% annual rate comes to $1,459.28 a month, $1,511.36 of interest over the year.
Set against the $4,800 cost of the card-sales offer, the fixed-payment option costs $3,288.64 less in this example. The card-sales offer still has a place: the amount to the provider shrinks in slow weeks, and an offer can come together where a bank line cannot. The working capital and line of credit pages cover the fixed-payment side.
Accommodation and Food Services (NAICS 72) counted 65 establishments with a ZIP 52501 address in 2023 (ZBP). For any of them weighing an offer, the comparison worth writing out is the dollar cost of each option and the payment in a weak week.
